The Westside had a special treat this past weekend as it celebrated Congressman Danny K. Davis ‘Back to School’ Parade and 31st Taste of Austin at Columbus Park. Organized by the Austin Peoples Action Center, throughout the weekend, folks were enjoying live entertainment, food vendors and games for the kids. This has been a tradition for many Austin residents for the past 31 years with various organizations participating from the community.
Across the Westside at Garfield Park, the 3rd Annual Chicago Westside Music Festival presented by BMO Harris Bank kicked off an entire day of R&B and Soul performances by local and national talent. With a line-up of corporate sponsors and event partner support that rivaled the stellar roster of entertainment, festival goers enjoyed small businesses and food vendors. One of the main highlights for special VIP attendees was the Remy Martin tent where 21+ attendees enjoyed cocktail sampling and a wonderful view of the stage.
R&B Singer and festival performer, Terisa Griffin comments, “It was such a blessing to be a part of the Chicago Westside Music Festival; it is something that is definitely needed. It feels s good to know that a cultural event can give back this way for our community and be included as a performer in the process. “
“We are so thankful to everyone that came out and supported the Chicago Westside Music Festival,” said Co-producer, Michelle Geddes. “Our third year was bigger and better and we had a ball! It was a safe, fun atmosphere with a full day of AMAZING MUSIC!”
Live performances included Anita Hotep and the Sol Collective, La Obra, with reunion of Brownstone, headed up by R&B Diva Creator and co-star Nicci Gilbert. The crowd rocked the evening away singing along with the group as they belted out their 90’s hits, “Grapevyne”, “If You Love Me” and “5 Miles to Empty”. Lawn chairs filled the South end of Garfield Park with a peaceful energy and appreciation of the free festival.
After Brownstone, the headliner 112 brought the crowd to their feet with their string of hits including; “Cupid”, “Dance for Me” and “Only You” with members, working the stage in all white outfits. The former Bad Boy Records artists treated the audience to an energetic and nonstop show to wrap up the night.
The Chicago Westside Music Festival was presented by the Michael Scott, Jr., M Group Worldwide, the Chicago Park District and the Westside Cultural Foundation (WCF).The organization seeks to create free cultural experiences throughout the Westside of Chicago.
